Posted on 06/25/2015

Dr. Anne Parsons, assistant professor in Women’s & Gender Studies and History at UNCG, has been named as one of the 2015 Soros Justice Fellows.  The fellowship funds projects and individuals that tackle diverse issues facing the U.S. criminal justice system.  As part of a larger effort of the Open Society Foundations’ Justice Fund, eligible projects challenge the system’s overreliance on incarceration and extreme punishment, and seek to reduce the damaging impact of criminal justice policies on individuals, families, and communities in the U.S.  Parsons intends write a book exploring the intersection of the deinstitutionalization of mental hospitals and the rise of mass incarceration, demonstrating how one form of confinement and stigmatization has replaced the other.  Fellows receive stipends of $58,700 to $110,250 for full-time projects lasting between 12 and 18 months.

Congratulations, Dr. Parsons!
