Dr. Parsons will share a section of her book manuscript Return of the Asylum: Deinstitutionalization and the Rise of Prisons. In 1946, Mary Jane Ward published the semi-autobiographical novel The Snake Pit, in which she lambasted the abuses of power and therapeutic authority in state mental hospitals. This paper explores how the filmmaker Anatole Litvak and other cultural critics twisted Ward’s critiques, using The Snake Pit as a call for reform and more hospital construction – in direct opposition to the claims of The Snake Pit.
